EU Forces Board MV SUN Tanker Over Suspected Links to Russia’s Shadow Fleet

European Union forces boarded the oil tanker MV SUN in the Mediterranean on August 30 to verify its flag status. The vessel is suspected of being part of Russia’s shadow fleet, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on August 31.

According to Kallas, the tanker was suspected of sailing under a false flag in violation of international maritime law. The vessel was boarded by forces participating in the EU’s Mediterranean naval operation, EUNAVFOR MED IRINI, for flag verification.
The EU foreign policy chief described illicit oil sales carried out through Russia’s shadow fleet as a critical source of revenue supporting Moscow’s war against Ukraine and said the EU would continue efforts to disrupt the network.

“Illegal oil sales from shadow fleet ships are a critical lifeline for Russia’s war in Ukraine, and we’ll continue to cut them off,” she said.
The MV SUN is the sixth vessel suspected of belonging to the shadow fleet to be boarded by EU operations in recent months, according to EU foreign policy chief.
Efforts to counter the fleet are set to feature on the agenda when EU defense ministers meet in Ireland on September 1.
Earlier in August, Sweden announced that it would hand over the seized Caffa vessel, which has been linked to Russia’s shadow fleet, to Ukraine following a landmark court decision.
The vessel is suspected of having been involved in the illegal transportation of Ukrainian grain from Russian-occupied territories.
Swedish authorities detained Caffa on March 6. In June, a Swedish court approved Ukraine’s request to seize the vessel, marking the first such decision in the country’s history.
