Belarus May Arm Polonez Missiles With Nuclear Warheads in Cooperation With Russia

Belarus is exploring the possibility of arming its Polonez multiple launch rocket systems with nuclear warheads. The statement was made on Thursday by State Secretary of the Security Council Alexander Volfovich, as reported by Nasha Niva on August 21.
Currently, Belarus does not possess its own nuclear arsenal. However, Russian tactical nuclear warheads have been deployed on its territory, remaining under Moscow’s control. Despite this, Volfovich acknowledged that Minsk is actively studying the option of modifying its Polonez systems to be fitted with nuclear warheads.
“Today it is a modern system. The range of the missiles used to be 200 km, and now they reach 300 km. It is a high-precision weapon,” he stated.

According to Volfovich, its precision and capability mean the system continues to undergo upgrades, with discussions now focusing on the potential integration of nuclear warheads.
If such a step were taken, it would effectively hand Belarusian forces control over nuclear weapons—an action that would violate existing international agreements. Russia has previously underlined that nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus remain under the exclusive control of Russian authorities, ruling out any transfer of command to Minsk.
At the same time, Volfovich revealed that Belarus is considering cooperation with Moscow on advanced missile technologies.
Earlier, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko announced that Minsk intends to deepen its cooperation with Iran in all areas, including the military sphere.
