Belgium has enlisted support from international military partners to help monitor and respond to unauthorized drone activity detected in its airspace.

According to Reuters on November 10, Belgium’s Defense Minister, Theo Francken, noted last week that there is speculation Russia may be linked to the incidents.

Reuters highlights that Belgium has recently come into focus due to the frozen Russian assets held in the Brussels-based securities depository Euroclear.

The European Union has proposed using the interest generated from these assets to support Ukraine. In response, Russia has warned of what it called a “painful” reaction if the proposal moves forward.

To assist with aerial monitoring and potential drone threats, specialized teams from France and Germany have arrived in Belgium, alongside 20 Royal Air Force personnel from the UK. These teams are equipped with systems capable of disrupting the electronic signals used by drones.

“We don’t yet know the origin of these drones, and neither do the Belgians, but we’re assisting by providing our equipment and expertise,” said Richard Knighton, Chief of the UK’s Defense Staff.

Earlier, it was reported that drones have been spotted in Belgian airspace in recent weeks, including three drones seen flying near the Doel nuclear power plant.
