Biden Administration to Announce $1.2 Billion Arms Package for Ukraine in Coming Days, Says Reuters
The Biden administration is set to announce a $1.2 billion package under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) in the coming days. The funds will be used to procure new weapons for Ukraine, Reuters reported on December 20.
According to sources, the package will include air defense interceptors and artillery munitions, though the exact details are expected to be disclosed once the announcement is made.
Under USAI, military equipment is sourced from the defense industry or partners, rather than from US stockpiles, meaning its delivery to the battlefield may take months or even years.
This USAI package could mark one of the final steps the United States takes in providing direct military support to Ukraine before the return of President-elect Donald Trump, who has publicly questioned military aid and promised to end the war within 24 hours of taking office on January 20.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the United States has provided $175 billion in aid to Ukraine, including approximately $61.4 billion in security assistance.
About half of this security aid has been delivered through the USAI program, while the rest was allocated from existing military stockpiles as part of a presidential directive to reduce personnel levels.
Previously it was announced that the Drone Coalition and the Maritime Coalition, within the framework of the Ramstein format, will begin delivering thousands of drones of various types to Ukraine starting in January 2025, according to the Deputy Minister of Defense of the United Kingdom, Luke Pollard, during his address to the House of Commons on December 19.
