Borrell: EU Aid Accounts for Nearly Half of Global Support to Ukraine, Totaling $122 Billion
During a joint press conference in Kyiv, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell addressed a question on the potential impact of a change in US administration on support for Ukraine, emphasizing the EU’s substantial role in aiding Ukraine.
Borrell noted that while it’s too early to speculate on possible US policy shifts, the EU remains committed to its support, which currently accounts for 47% of all global assistance to Ukraine.
“I cannot speculate about it. What I can say is that our security commitments remain valid and that our action has been so important, as important as the US action. Because if you add up all kinds of support to Ukraine—military, civilian, humanitarian, financial—the European Union provided 122 billion of assistance to Ukraine, which is about 50%-47% to say exactly the figures of all support that Ukraine has received, stated Borrell.
Borrell underscored that while the future direction of US policy is uncertain, the EU’s aid level and commitment are set to continue. He also noted the EU’s efforts to mobilize additional resources, including funds derived from Russian assets, to sustain this level of support.
This press conference followed Borrell’s meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, where they discussed ongoing EU-Ukraine cooperation as well as future security measures.
In addition, Borrell reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts, speaking of the extension of the EU training mission for an additional two years. “We have already trained 60,000 Ukrainian soldiers, and we will reach 75,000 by the end of the winter,” he noted, underscoring the EU’s efforts to aid Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.
