Brazil Honors Ukrainian Author’s Chronicle of War in Brazil’s Top Books of 2025

The book Ukraine: Diaries of an Invasion (Ucrânia: Diário de uma guerra) by Ukrainian writer, journalist, and screenwriter Andrii Kurkov has been included in the list of the best publications in Brazil for the first half of 2025.
The announcement was made by the author on his Facebook page on July 12.
Among all Brazilian non-fiction publications of 2025, Kurkov’s book ranked 22nd.
The list was compiled by journalists from one of Brazil’s most renowned and influential newspapers, O Globo and was unveiled on July 7.
According to the publisher Carambaia, early in the morning of February 24, 2022, the writer Andrey Kurkov, as many other Ukrainians, was awakened in his apartment near Kyiv’s historic center by the sound of explosions. These were Russian missiles in a coordinated attack on multiple targets across the country.

The next day, Kurkov left the besieged capital, headed west along crowded roads. The most famous writer in the country, author of dozens of books published and translated into more than forty languages, became one of millions of displaced Ukrainians. A few days later, having found refuge with his family in the apartment of a woman who didn’t know them, he started writing his novel to document events in the form of a diary.
“In addition to a vivid account of the strange and terrifying early days of the 2022 invasion, readers can experience stories that rarely make it into international coverage—from daily hardships and the moving solidarity between strangers, to events that would be fascinating if they weren't so tragic, like film screenings on Kyiv metro platforms where people sought shelter from bombs,” Carambaia notes.
Earlier, Ukrainian writer Viktoria Amelina, who was killed in a Russian missile strike on Kramatorsk in 2023, has been posthumously awarded the prestigious Orwell Prize for Political Writing. She received the honor for her unfinished book Looking at Women Looking at War.
