On April 17, Ukrainian illustrator Jenya Polosina won a top honor at the 44th American Illustration Awards for her collage Four Scenarios for Ukraine’s Endgame, originally created for The New York Times article.

The illustration shows three men gazing toward a smoke-covered horizon, where a church and homes burn in the distance. It accompanied a thought-provoking essay by political scientist Ryan Menon, exploring possible outcomes of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Jenya described the award as a great honor, but also said: “Unfortunately, the analysis and predictions for the end of the war in Ukraine are still relevant and continue three months later. I suspect that it won’t lose its relevance any time soon”.

Polosina has long used her art to shed light on the realities of life in Ukraine. She collaborated with fellow illustrator Anna Ivanenko and co-created the documentary comic Blackout. Chronicles of Our Life During Russia’s War Against Ukraine, which in 2023 won Best Book Design at the annual book festival Book Arsenal.

Earlier, The Beyond the Silence multimedia exhibition, a collaboration between the Odesa Photo Days Festival and Magnum Photos, opened at the Jam Factory Art Center in Lviv, Ukraine.
