Brazilian President Lula Plans Moscow Trip to Offer Role as Mediator for Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks
Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva thinks before going to his press conference in Tokyo on March 27, 2025.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is planning a visit to Moscow in the coming days, with the primary goal of positioning Brazil as a mediator for peace between Ukraine and Russia. During the trip, Lula intends to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to O GLOBO on May 6.

Lula seeks to present Brazil as an independent force in global diplomacy, distinct from other major powers, and actively engage in facilitating a peace agreement between the warring nations, the publication reported.

Additionally, Lula aims to signal Brazil’s independent foreign policy stance, distinct from that of other major global powers.

Lula intends to inform Putin in Moscow that Brazil wants to play an active role in facilitating a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. He has previously called on both sides to engage in any negotiations aimed at achieving peace.

The publication also noted that Lula plans to participate in the military parade in Moscow on May 9.

Furthermore, Brazil’s foreign policy advisor, Celso Amorim, stated that mediating an end to the war is no longer the exclusive responsibility of the great powers. He also believes Moscow has shown a greater willingness for dialogue.

Previously, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has confirmed he plans to attend the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9, despite public warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about potential security risks for visiting foreign leaders.
