A British national who arrived in Ukraine as a military instructor has been reportedly arrested on suspicion of carrying out intelligence and sabotage operations under the direction of Russian special services, according to sources in the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), cited by Ukrinform on December 2.

The individual, identified as Ross David Catmor, is a former British Army servicemember with prior military deployments in the Middle East.

He entered Ukraine in 2024 to support the training and preparation of Armed Forces personnel. According to SBU sources, Catmor had been reportedly recruited by Russian intelligence prior to his arrival and operated in Ukraine through 2024 and 2025.

SBU investigators allege that Catmor received firearms and ammunition from Russian handlers. The weapons were reportedly intended for the execution of targeted killings within Ukraine.

According to the same Ukrinform source, authorities have grounds to believe that Catmor was involved in the transfer and distribution of weapons later used in the deaths of three Ukrainian public figures: Demian Hanul, Iryna Farion, and Andrii Parubiy.

The counterintelligence operation that led to Catmor’s detention was carried out in early October and coordinated by Major General Oleksandr Poklad, Deputy Head of the SBU. Although he has remained in custody since the time of arrest, his identity was not disclosed publicly until December.

“The individual is currently in custody, and investigative actions are ongoing,” the SBU source told Ukrinform.

Earlier, the SBU detained a 54‑year‑old woman in Donetsk who posed as a cleaner to spy on Ukrainian soldiers, secretly photographing their documents and sending the data to Russian handlers via a chatbot.
