British Defense Minister John Healey expressed optimism regarding the incoming administration of Donald Trump, stating he expects it to uphold a commitment to both NATO and support for Ukraine’s defense against Russia, Sky News reported on November 11.

Talking about concerns of a potential decrease in US support following Trump’s election victory last week Healey said “As far as President Trump goes, he recognizes that countries achieve security through strength, and alliances like NATO do as well.”

“And I expect the US to remain alongside allies like the UK, standing with Ukraine for as long as it takes to prevail over Putin’s invasion.”

At the same time, Healey pointed out the need for European nations to contribute more to defense spending, a call echoed by US officials over recent years.

“I don’t expect the US to turn away from NATO. They recognize the importance of the alliance. They recognize the importance of avoiding further conflicts in Europe,” he concluded.

Earlier, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron were about to discuss Ukraine’s authorization of Storm Shadow use on Russian soil as well as bolstering military support for Ukraine, aiming to counter anticipated shifts in US policy under Donald Trump.
