Canada Appoints Chrystia Freeland to Head Ukraine Reconstruction Efforts

Chrystia Freeland, a Canadian politician of Ukrainian origin, will become Canada’s special representative for Ukraine’s reconstruction, Bloomberg reported on September 16.
To take on the new position, Freeland will step down as Minister of Transport and Internal Trade. According to a Canadian government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, she will work directly with Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ukrainian leaders on a plan to rebuild Ukraine’s economy.
In her new role, Freeland will also engage Canadian business leaders, labor unions, and the country’s Ukrainian community to mobilize support for reconstruction.
Carney emphasized that Freeland has unique advantages for the job, citing her experience as Canada’s minister of finance, foreign affairs, and international trade.
“As a former G7 Minister of Finance, Foreign Affairs, and International Trade with deep relationships and understanding of Ukraine and its economy, Chrystia is truly uniquely positioned for this timely and essential work towards a better future for Ukrainians and peace in Europe,” he said.
According to Bloomberg, Freeland played a key role in driving Canada’s staunch support for Ukraine during her time in cabinet. She was instrumental in helping lead a G7 finance ministers’ initiative to leverage frozen Russian central bank assets to provide financial assistance to Kyiv.
Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine and Canada signed a deal to expand cooperation in defense production, covering the manufacturing of drones as well as counter-drone systems.
