Canada and Ukraine Strike Defense Deal to Co-Produce Drones and Counter-Drone Tech

Ukraine and Canada have signed an agreement to expand joint defense production, including the manufacturing of drones and counter-drone systems.
According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, the agreement was signed on August 24 by him and Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Shmyhal stated that the initiative is aimed at deepening bilateral defense-industrial cooperation, establishing new production facilities in both countries, and strengthening the continuity of defense supply chains.

He emphasized that the agreement will facilitate the creation of Ukrainian companies in Canada, enable technology exchange, and ensure long-term supply of modern weapons and military equipment to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
President Zelenskyy noted during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Carney that a priority area of cooperation will be the joint production of drones. He underlined that Ukraine faces a significant shortage of unmanned systems and requires expanded production to meet frontline demand.
The Canadian government has already allocated initial funding to support the initiative. Discussions between Shmyhal and McGuinty also covered investment in drone manufacturing projects and expansion of broader industrial cooperation.
Earlier, on August 24, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a $1.5 billion military aid package for Ukraine, including funding for drones, armored vehicles, electronic warfare systems, and joint defense projects. The aid is part of Canada’s broader $2 billion pledge made at the G7 summit.
