China has expressed support for the proposed 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, an initiative put forward by Kyiv, its European partners, and the United States, as part of efforts to create space for renewed diplomatic negotiations.

Commenting on the proposal in a statement to Ukrinform on May 12, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing supports any efforts that aim at a political resolution to what China continues to refer to as the “Ukraine crisis.”

“Regarding the ‘Ukraine crisis,’ China’s position has been consistent and clear. We believe that all efforts should be directed toward achieving peace,” Lin said.

He added that China hopes all parties will continue dialogue and negotiations to reach a fair, long-term, and binding peace agreement acceptable to all sides.

“We have always believed—and continue to stress—that dialogue and negotiations are the only viable way out of the ‘crisis,’” Lin emphasized.

Responding to a request to comment on US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks urging greater involvement by major powers, including Turkey and China, in efforts to end the war, the Chinese official reiterated Beijing’s willingness to help.

“China is ready, in line with the wishes of the parties concerned, to work with the international community and continue to play a constructive role in resolving the ‘crisis’ and achieving lasting peace,” Lin said.

While China has maintained a neutral posture throughout the war, its growing engagement in diplomatic initiatives signals a potential shift amid international calls for greater global involvement in peace efforts.

Earlier, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin agreed to deepen their strategic cooperation and vowed to “decisively” counter what they described as the United States’ policy of “dual containment” targeting both Russia and China.
