Chinese military personnel will take part in Russia’s Victory Day parade on May 9 in Moscow, according to Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

He made the announcement during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 8, ahead of the 80th anniversary commemorations of the end of World War II.

According to Russian state media TASS, citing Vladimir Putin, the Chinese contingent will be the largest among all foreign military units participating in the May 9 parade on Red Square. He described the group as a “parade formation” of the People’s Liberation Army of China.

During the meeting, Putin stated that Russia and China “stand together in defending historical truth and countering modern manifestations of neo-Nazism and militarism.”

He also noted the shared losses and contributions of the Soviet Union and China in World War II, describing their role as a “historic contribution to global peace and human progress.”

President Xi arrived in Moscow to attend the anniversary events and was described by Russian officials as the “main foreign guest” of this year’s parade. His visit includes bilateral talks and participation in official celebrations on May 9.

Earlier, Russian outlet Agenstvo reported that this year’s May 9 parade will be the largest since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022. Rehearsal footage suggests at least 184 vehicles, 12 drones, and 15 aircraft will take part—significantly more than in recent years, though still modest compared to major anniversary parades before the war.
