Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin have agreed to deepen their strategic cooperation and vowed to “decisively” counter what they described as the United States’ policy of “dual containment” targeting both Russia and China

The pledge was made in a joint statement released after the two leaders met in Moscow on May 8, according to Reuters.

The joint statement emphasized both countries’ intention to deepen cooperation across all sectors, including the military. Xi Jinping stated that China and Russia must “eliminate external interference” and oppose “unilateralism and bullying.”

Despite Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and growing international isolation, the Kremlin staged a military parade on Red Square. According to Russian media, the parade featured equipment used in combat. A Chinese delegation is also expected to take part in the May 9 events.

The agency added that the statement also addressed the war in Ukraine, with the Russian and Chinese leaders reiterating that the conflict can only be resolved by eliminating its “root causes”—a phrase Moscow has repeatedly used to justify its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

On May 8, Putin stated that the Chinese contingent will be the largest among all foreign military units participating in the May 9 parade on Red Square. He described the group as a “parade formation” of the People’s Liberation Army of China.
