China Deploys New Drone Carrier to South China Sea Amid Regional Drills

China’s new Type 076 “drone-carrier” amphibious assault ship, the Sichuan, is sailing to the South China Sea for sea trials, South China Morning Post reported on April 22.
The deployment coincides with joint military exercises in the same waters involving the US, the Philippines, Japan, and other allied nations.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy stated the Sichuan departed Shanghai to test onboard systems and platforms. The ship, which completed its maiden sea trial in November, is designed to transport landing craft, troops, armored vehicles, and aircraft for amphibious operations. It is widely considered a key asset for potential military action against Taiwan.
South China Morning Post quotes Taiwan's defense ministry report that China’s first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, also transited the Taiwan Strait on Monday, carrying eight J-15 fighter jets and three helicopters. Its course indicates it is also heading to the South China Sea.

The Chinese naval movements overlap with the annual US-Philippine Balikatan exercise. This year’s drills involve nearly 19,000 troops, with active participation from Japan, Australia, Canada, France, and New Zealand. Admiral Samuel Paparo, head of US Indo-Pacific Command, stated that deterring China remains the US military’s highest duty in the region. The exercises include maritime strikes, counter-landing operations, and air and missile defense.
The Philippine Coast Guard had recently deployed ships and aircraft to the disputed Scarborough Shoal after Chinese forces harassed over 20 Filipino fishing boats. Surveillance recorded a heavy Chinese presence in the area, including Coast Guard vessels, 20 maritime militia ships, and a Navy warship.
During the standoff, Philippine authorities noted that a Chinese Coast Guard ship broadcasted an intent to conduct a “clearing operation” within the Philippine exclusive economic zone.
