The United States officially kicked off its massive annual joint Indo-Pacific military drills in the Philippines on, Bloomberg reported on April 20.

The aim of the drills is to strongly reassure regional allies of its defense commitments even as Washington remains embroiled in a war with Iran.

The maritime and live-fire exercises, known as “Balikatan,” will run through May 8 and take place near critical geopolitical flashpoints in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait. This year’s drills bring together more than 17,000 troops from seven nations, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, and the host nation, the Philippines. Notably, Japan is deploying 1,400 troops to participate in the combat drills for the very first time.

The US has committed nearly 10,000 troops to the exercises.

“Regardless of the challenges elsewhere in the world, the United States’ focus on the Indo-Pacific and our ironclad commitment to the Philippines remain unwavering,” US Lieutenant General Christian Wortman, the director of the exercises, stated during a briefing, according to Bloomberg.

The drills are taking place amidst escalating tensions with China. Just one day before Balikatan began, Beijing dispatched a group of warships to conduct its own drills in the western Pacific. Tensions between Manila and Beijing have also been boiling over in the disputed South China Sea, following recent allegations of China utilizing cyanide and flares against Philippine vessels.

During the exercises, troops will train with advanced weaponry, including US-developed Typhon missile systems and BrahMos cruise missiles. Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi is also scheduled to observe a highly anticipated ship-sinking drill next month involving the live firing of Tokyo’s Type 88 missiles alongside US and Philippine weapons.

Philippine military spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla emphasized that the growing coalition “shows that more and more nations are working towards a common goal, that is to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

The presence of the 17,000-troop Balikatan exercises comes following China’s continuous monitoring of US and allied military movements in the Indo-Pacific. During recent joint naval drills between the United States and Australia within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone, open-source analysts identified a Chinese Type 815 Dongdiao-class intelligence vessel actively shadowing the allied formation.

Designed to intercept radar emissions and telemetry data, the surveillance ship trailed the USS Fitzgerald and HMAS Ballarat as they operated near Philippine waters.
