Active combat is ongoing in the Kursk operational zone, particularly in the outskirts of Sudzha and surrounding areas, as Russian forces attempt to breach Ukrainian defenses and push the fighting into Sumy and Kharkiv regions, according to a statement by Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi, published on his official Telegram channel on March 12.

Russia has deployed airborne assault units and special operations forces in an effort to break through Ukrainian lines but has suffered significant losses.

“The enemy has already suffered and continues to suffer heavy losses in Kursk, despite its efforts to achieve political objectives at any cost,” Syrskyi stated.

Syrskyi reports that since the beginning of the Kursk operation on August 6, 2024, Russian losses have reportedly exceeded 54,900 troops, including 22,200 killed, 31,800 wounded, and 942 captured. Ukrainian forces have also destroyed or damaged approximately 2,100 pieces of Russian military equipment, including 90 tanks, 654 armored vehicles, five multiple rocket launchers, two air defense systems, one aircraft, and two helicopters.

Additionally, Ukrainian officials claim that Russian aviation has conducted an unprecedented number of strikes on its own territory, with Sudzha nearly destroyed due to Russian airstrikes.

Syrskyi emphasized that protecting Ukrainian soldiers remains a top priority, explaining that forces are maneuvering to more advantageous positions when needed while utilizing drones and artillery strikes to counter Russian advances.

“I have issued all necessary orders to ensure our troops can operate effectively while minimizing casualties,” he stated.

As of 6:00 p.m. local time, Ukrainian forces had repelled eight Russian assault attempts in the Kursk direction.

Despite intensified pressure from Russian and North Korean forces, Syrskyi reaffirmed Ukraine’s determination to hold the line.

“We will continue defending Kursk for as long as it remains necessary and strategically viable,” he said.

Previously, it was reported that Ukraine confirms Russian advances in Kursk Region, pushing toward Sudzha.
