Daily Update: Russia Loses 1,170 Troops, 8 Tanks, and 70 Artillery Systems in Ukraine

Ukraine’s Defense Forces reported another day of heavy Russian losses across the front, claiming that 1,170 Russian troops were killed or wounded between January 20 and January 21, according to an update released by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on January 21.

In addition to personnel losses, Ukrainian forces said they destroyed 8 tanks, 10 armored fighting vehicles, 70 artillery systems, and 1,019 operational-tactical drones over the same 24-hour period.

According to Ukrainian military estimates, Russia’s cumulative combat losses since the start of its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, through January 21, 2026, now include approximately:

  • personnel: about 1,229,740 (+1,170);

  • tanks: 11,587 (+8);

  • armored fighting vehicles: 23,938 (+10);

  • artillery systems: 36,463 (+70);

  • multiple launch rocket systems: 1,621 (+1);

  • air defense systems: 1,278 (+3);

  • fixed-wing aircraft: 434;

  • helicopters: 347;

  • operational-tactical UAVs: 112,159 (+1,019);

  • cruise missiles: 4,190 (+27);

  • ships and boats: 28;

  • submarines: 2;

  • vehicles and fuel tankers: 75,238 (+171);

  • special equipment: 4,049 (+1).

The General Staff also reported 110 combat engagements over the past day, with the Pokrovsk direction seeing the highest number of attacks (36), followed by the Kostiantynivka direction (14).

According to operational data released as of 8:00 a.m. on January 21, Russian forces carried out 5 missile strikes and 74 airstrikes, firing 39 missiles and dropping 184 guided aerial bombs. Ukrainian positions and populated areas were also targeted by 7,754 suicide drones and 3,814 artillery strikes, including 44 attacks using multiple launch rocket systems.

Earlier, reports emerged that Ukrainian forces driven most Russian troops out of Kupiansk, with fewer than 100 Russian soldiers believed to remain, hiding in basements and ruined buildings in parts of the city.
