Denmark Discreetly Provides Ukraine With 2S1 Gvozdika Howitzers

Denmark continues to strengthen Ukraine’s artillery capabilities by delivering a range of military equipment, including self-propelled howitzers (SPHs) Caesar and M109, as well as placing orders for additional French and Slovak SPHs, and even Ukrainian Bohdana systems.

According to Defense Express, on January 22, recent updates reveal that Denmark has also supplied Soviet-era 2S1 Gvozdika howitzers to Ukraine, despite no prior announcements.

The discovery of this transfer was made possible through an updated Danish government list of military aid to Ukraine. Danish security analyst Hans Tino Hansen was the first to note the addition of the 2S1 Gvozdika systems. This update appeared between November 28 and December 12, 2024.

No details have been provided on the quantity of these systems or their origins. Identifying the source is particularly challenging, given that 2S1 Gvozdika howitzers are either in active service or were previously operated in 30 countries worldwide.

Denmark has been a significant contributor to Ukraine’s defense efforts, despite its limited domestic production capabilities. In addition to transferring its available SPH inventory, Denmark has ordered 16 Slovak-made Zuzana-2 systems in cooperation with Germany and Norway and initiated a partnership to acquire Ukrainian Bohdana howitzers, establishing what has been termed the Danish model.

Beyond artillery, Denmark’s military aid package to Ukraine has included F-16 fighter jets, over 140 Leopard 1 tanks, approximately 50 M113 armored personnel carriers, and contributions totaling €8.7 billion to Ukraine’s Defense Fund.

Earlier, Denmark became the first NATO country to invest in Ukraine’s domestic arms production by signing a historic Memorandum during the 23rd meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine in June 2024. This agreement enabled the purchase of Ukrainian-made military equipment. The first 18 Bohdana self-propelled howitzers funded by Denmark were delivered to the Armed Forces of Ukraine in September 2024.
