“Every Day Ukraine Fights On, Is a Day the EU and NATO Can Grow Stronger,” Says EU Defense Chief
Andrius Kubilius, European Commissioner for Defence and Space, stated on January 20 that the European Union is grappling with “colossal” military shortfalls, requiring a bold and unified strategy for defense production and procurement.
“Defending Ukraine means defending Europe. Every missile, every drone shot down by Ukraine – is one that will not threaten Europe, one that will not threaten NATO,” Kubilius said.
“Every day Ukraine stands fast, is a day of delay. A day Putin cannot turn his full might against us. Every day Ukraine fights on, is a day the European Union and NATO can grow stronger. We can prevent Russian aggression if we are strong.”
Speaking at the European Defence Agency’s annual conference, Kubilius urged the adoption of a “big bang” approach to tackle these deficiencies and stressed the importance of collective action.
“I could not agree more [with Rutte ]. I very similarly speak about the need for a ‘Big Bang’ approach to overhaul European defence. And you rightly pointed out recently […] the urgent need to increase our defence spending,” said Kubilius.
Kubilius referenced Rutte’s earlier statement emphasizing the urgency of taking action now.
“‘If we don’t do that, we are safe now, but not in four or five years. So, if you don’t do it, get your Russian language courses or go to New Zealand, or decide now to spend more,’ a powerful message, which explains everything,” said the European Commissioner.
Kubilius pointed out that Putin’s ambitions reach beyond the occupation of Ukraine, posing a direct threat to Europe.
“If you listen to Putin and his propagandists, war aims go well beyond Ukraine. And include annexation and occupation of parts of Europe. And the domination of the rest,” he added.
The official noted that Europe is facing not only an aggressive Russia but also North Korea and Iran, with China not being far away.
“We are already under threat. Disinformation. Weaponisation of migrants. Repeated attacks on cables in the Baltic. Sabotage. Arson. Espionage. Murder. Attacks are increasing in intensity and severity,” Kubilius stated.
“The EU economy is many times larger than the Russian economy. Together we can outspend and outproduce and outgun Russia. This way, we can deter aggression and prevent war, ‘ Kubilius concluded his speech.
On January 13, Rutte called on member states to increase defense spending and improve military production to maintain security in the coming years.
