Despite Past Push to Revoke Status, Trump Now Supports Ukrainian Refugees’ Stay in US

US President Donald Trump said he would allow Ukrainian refugees to remain in the United States until the end of the Russian war against Ukraine, Ukrainian media outlet Kyiv Post reported on July 30.
“We’ll do that. We have a lot of people who came in from Ukraine, and we’re working with them,” Trump told reporters on July 29 when asked whether Ukrainians fleeing the war would be allowed to stay in the US.

Kyiv Post called the statement unexpected, especially in light of Trump’s previous efforts to drastically restrict refugee admissions and tighten visa rules during his administration. The remarks also appear to contrast with broader White House efforts under Trump to limit humanitarian admissions programs.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, the United States has taken in tens of thousands of Ukrainians under the Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) program, launched by former President Joe Biden.

The initiative allows Ukrainian nationals with US-based sponsors to enter and remain in the country temporarily. According to Forbes, more than 236,000 sponsorship applications had been approved under the program by June 2025, and over 187,000 Ukrainians had arrived.
Earlier, Trump issued Russian leader Vladimir Putin an ultimatum, saying that the Russian leader has until August 8 to initiate a peace agreement with Ukraine—after that, the United States will impose secondary sanctions, including tariffs and other economic measures.
