Russian leader Vladimir Putin has until August 8 to initiate a peace agreement with Ukraine—after that, the United States will impose secondary sanctions, including tariffs and other economic measures.

This ultimatum was issued by US President Donald Trump during a conversation with reporters aboard Air Force One as he departed Scotland on July 29.

“Ten days from today,” Trump said. “Then we’ll put on tariffs and other things. I don’t know if it’s going to affect Russia, because he [Putin] probably wants to keep the war going. But we’ll do it.”

Trump added that he hasn’t received any response from Moscow regarding the new deadline: “I haven’t had any response. It’s a shame.”

He also clarified that the original timeframe he gave Russia was 50 days, but in light of ongoing hostilities and mounting casualties, he has decided to shorten it. He also added that he is “very disappointed” in Putin.

Despite potential global economic concerns, Trump said he isn’t worried about oil market impacts, stating that the US has ample reserves and can boost domestic production if needed.

On the same day, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow had “taken note” of Trump’s position but remains committed to continuing its war against Ukraine under the guise of the so-called “special military operation.”
