Medvedev Mocks Trump’s Tariff Threat as “Showy Ultimatum” in Ukraine Standoff

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council and former Russian President, dismissed Donald Trump’s pledge to impose 100% import tariffs on Russia and its trade partners if no Ukraine ceasefire deal is reached within 50 days as a “theatrical ultimatum” unlikely to sway Moscow.
Medvedev took to his English-language X account to deride the proposal as mere political theater. “Trump issued a theatrical ultimatum to the Kremlin.” he wrote.

The world shuddered, expecting the consequences.
Belligerent Europe was disappointed.
Russia didn’t care.
Analysts view the 50-day deadline—threatening steep tariffs if no ceasefire is brokered—as largely symbolic. Economist Justin Wolfers argues that “a 100% tariff on almost nothing will do almost nothing,” given the minimal volume of US–Russia trade.

Medvedev’s rejection follows weeks of intensifying rhetoric over the Ukraine war, with Western leaders debating tougher sanctions and Moscow consistently rebuffing calls for an unconditional halt to hostilities.
By labeling the tariff threat “showy,” Medvedev aimed to portray the Kremlin as steadfast against what he calls empty posturing.
Earlier, it was reported that Trump gave a 50-day deadline for a Ukraine ceasefire, warning of 100% import tariffs on Russia and its partners if no agreement is secured.
