Drone Attack Disrupts Operations at Key Russian Chemical Facility Shchekinoazot, Video

On July 17, a drone strike targeted the Shchekinoazot chemical complex in the Tula region of Russia. At least four drones hit the facility, igniting a fire in one of the rectification columns. The resulting explosion caused depressurization, allowing the flames to spread rapidly.
The strike also reportedly damaged critical infrastructure, including a high-pressure steam pipeline that delivers superheated steam from the local thermal power station to production units, as well as the roof of a furnace within the methanol production area.
Shchekinoazot is a major producer of ammonia, methanol, and urea—substances with both civilian and military uses.
“This is an important enterprise for the production of ammonia, methanol, and urea. All of these substances form the basis for explosives, solid rocket fuel, and synthetic materials used by the Russian military-industrial complex,” said Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation.
“Without this facility, the production cycle for rockets, drones, and explosives for the Russian army is disrupted,” he added.
According to Militarniy, a new complex is under construction at the site, set to produce 525,000 tons of ammonia and 700,000 tons of urea annually, with operations expected to begin in early 2025.
Previously, it was reported that Ukrainian long-range drones targeted the Ilsky Oil Refinery in Russia’s Krasnodar region, resulting in a strike on one of the facility’s key technological units.
