President of Poland Andrzej Duda called on the US President Donald Trump to strengthen economic pressure on the Russian Federation in an effort to halt its ongoing war against Ukraine, as reported by Politico on May 5.

In an interview with Axel Springer’s Global Reporters Network, Duda expressed his belief that Trump is uniquely positioned to compel Russian leader Vladimir Putin to engage in peace negotiations.

According to Duda, the United States possesses powerful economic tools capable of exerting significant influence over the Kremlin. He emphasized that among global leaders, it is Trump who holds the necessary leverage to pressure Russia into compliance.

“America can use various economic instruments to force Russia to respect certain actions. So if anyone is in a position to force Vladimir Putin to make peace, it is America, the president of the United States,” Polish President said.

He further noted that Trump gained a clearer understanding of the geopolitical reality following his most recent conversations with Putin and now recognizes the strategic tools available to limit Russia’s core interests.

“The president of the United States has the means at his disposal to force Russia to comply. Some of these means may be very radical, very harsh, I believe, especially various economic instruments. But I believe that President Donald Trump is capable of implementing them,” he added.

President Duda also reaffirmed his belief in continued American support for NATO, ahead of the alliance’s annual summit scheduled for June in The Hague. While Trump has previously advocated for increasing defense spending among member states to 5% of GDP, Duda stated that a 3% threshold would be a more realistic and sustainable goal.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump had publicly addressed his recent encounter with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the first time, characterizing their brief conversation, held prior to the funeral of Pope Francis, as “beautiful.”
