US President Donald Trump has commented for the first time on his recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, describing their brief discussion ahead of Pope Francis' funeral as “beautiful,” according to CNN and Sky News reports on April 27.

During the 15-minute conversation, Trump said they touched on the issue of Crimea, which, under Trump’s proposed peace plan, the US would recognize as Russian territory.

“We’ll see what happens in the next few days,” Trump added. “Don’t talk to me about Crimea, talk to Obama and Biden about Crimea.”

Trump also said Zelenskyy requested additional weapons during the meeting. Dismissing any past tensions with the Ukrainian leader, Trump referred to their earlier, widely publicized Oval Office dispute as merely “a little argument.”

Now, Trump said “I see him as calmer. I think he understands the picture. And I think he wants to make a deal.” Trump argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin must also demonstrate a willingness to negotiate.

“I want him to stop shooting, sit down and sign a deal, we have the confines of a deal, I believe, and I want him to sign it and be done with it and just go back to life,’ Trump said.

The short but closely watched conversation between Trump and Zelenskyy took place just before the funeral services for Pope Francis. Though lasting only 15 minutes, Zelenskyy later said they managed to discuss “a lot.”

Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, said Trump had sought the face-to-face meeting to accelerate negotiations for a peace deal in Ukraine.

The White House described the meeting as “productive,” and Zelenskyy said it “has the potential to become historic if we achieve mutual results.”

Following the conversation, Trump criticized Russia’s recent attacks on Ukrainian civilian areas, questioning whether Putin was stalling and suggesting that the Russian leader might not actually be interested in ending the war.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the upcoming week would be critical for negotiations aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.
