US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Trump administration has outlined a path to peace for both Ukraine and Russia and now it’s up to both sides to say “yes,” Rubio said speaking from the Oval Office during a joint appearance with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on April 24.

“First of all, our partners have been offered options to discuss the things that will be necessary to end the war,” Rubio said. “This war can be ended. Both sides have to agree to that. We showed them the path forward.”

Rubio added that discussions on these proposals have already taken place and more are planned in the coming days.

“There was a good meeting yesterday. There will be good meetings over the weekend. We’ve shown them the finish line. We need both of them—Ukraine and Russia—to say ‘yes,’” he said.

He also addressed Russia’s recent missile strike on Kyiv, calling it a stark reminder of why ending the war is so urgent.

“Everyone should be thankful to the president for being a peacemaker and trying to save lives. That’s what we’re trying to do here,” Rubio said.

At the same time, Rubio emphasized the US is not a party to the war.

“This is not our war. We didn’t start it, as you know, but we are trying to end the killing. We are trying to end the destruction, and we have shown the path forward. We see the finish line, but both [countries] have to get there.”

Rubio reiterated the administration’s commitment to doing “everything possible” to bring both sides to a final agreement.

Earlier, reports emerged that the United States will demand Russia to acknowledge Ukraine’s right to maintain its own military and defense industry as part of a potential peace agreement. The issue is expected to be raised by US envoy Steve Witkoff in discussions with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
