On August 28, Estonia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian Chargé d’Affaires to deliver a formal note of protest regarding last night’s extensive missile and drone attacks on Kyiv.

The strikes, which targeted civilian infrastructure, resulted in the deaths of at least 21 people, including four children, according to Ukrainian sources. The youngest victim was just two years old.

The protest note highlighted both the deliberate targeting of civilians and violations of the Vienna Convention.

“This was a deliberate attack by Putin on civilians. At a time when Europe and the United States are making efforts together with Ukraine to end the war and achieve lasting peace, Putin clearly demonstrates that he has not abandoned his goals and continues to commit war crimes and kill civilians, including children,” said Estonian Foreign Minister Tsahkna.

“Putin’s participation in the Alaska meeting was merely a hypocritical way to evade new sanctions. But it is clear that peace is not being sought with 31 missiles and 598 attack drones,” Tsahkna added.

Tsahkna also noted the damage to diplomatic facilities, including the European Union Delegation building and the British Council building. “The targeting of diplomatic facilities is a clear and cruel violation of the Vienna Convention,” he said.

Other countries, including Latvia, Lithuania, and the United Kingdom, also summoned senior Russian diplomats today in response to the attacks.

Earlier, it was reported that Estonia has declared the first secretary of the Russian Embassy in Tallinn persona non grata, citing actions undermining the country’s constitutional order.
