EU Confirms: Ukraine’s Membership Path Is Irreversible, Not Up for Discussion in Ceasefire Talks

EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, confirmed that Ukraine’s path to EU membership is irreversible and cannot be part of any ceasefire negotiations with Russia, Ukrinform reported on September 2.
Speaking ahead of the informal EU foreign ministers' meeting in Copenhagen, Kos emphasized, “There is no turning back, … and EU membership is a political guarantee of security.”
Kos highlighted Ukraine’s progress in its EU accession process, with screenings for all six clusters completed and negotiations on the “Foundations” cluster set to begin. She stated, “we will not be able to ensure security in Europe unless we stabilise the continent, and enlargement can play a big part in this.”

Kos also addressed concerns about Ukraine’s anti-corruption reforms, acknowledging significant progress while noting that more steps are needed.
She emphasized that Ukraine and Moldova should move forward together in the accession process, saying, “We must open the ‘Foundations’ cluster for both countries.”
While the technical aspects of the process are moving forward, Kos stressed that political support remains essential.
“This is not an ordinary process, we are in a geopolitical situation where, for the first time in history, we have external destructive forces that would like to see our failure,” she said.
Kos expressed confidence that the EU would maintain unity in supporting Ukraine’s accession, as it did when granting candidate status, and urged continued efforts to ensure a coordinated approach.
Previously, it was reported that Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot has called on European countries delaying Ukraine’s accession to the European Union to remember their own past struggles and the help they once received from others.
