EU Extends Tariff-Free Access for Ukrainian Steel and Iron Until 2028

The European Parliament has extended the suspension of quotas and customs duties for Ukrainian iron and steel imports to the European Union for three years. This decision takes into account the expiration of the general autonomous trade measures for Ukrainian goods on June 6, 2025.
This extension is outlined in the legislative resolution “Suspension of Certain Provisions of Regulation (EU) 2015/478 on Imports of Ukrainian Products into the European Union,” adopted on May 8 which is available to European Pravda. The resolution allows duty-free imports of Ukrainian steel and iron into the EU until June 5, 2028.
The European Commission is currently working on a long-term framework to ensure greater economic transparency in trade relations between the EU and Ukraine, according to the European Parliament’s press service.
“Ukraine’s metallurgical industry is the backbone of the Ukrainian economy. It continues to operate despite many workers having gone to the front and the plants being subjected to brutal attacks by Russia,” said the European Parliament’s rapporteur, Swedish MEP Karin Karlsbro.
The resolution passed with 354 votes in favor, 147 against, and 53 abstentions.
The legislative resolution will take effect following its approval by the EU Council and its official publication.
Earlier, Ukraine is set to lift its long-standing ban on the export of domestically produced weapons. This policy shift represents a significant development for Ukraine’s defense industry, which has expanded rapidly since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
As domestic arms production increases, the government is evaluating mechanisms to facilitate international sales while maintaining priority support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
