Europe Creates “War Highway“ for Tanks and Troops to Defend Eastern Flank

The European Union is preparing a new plan to enable the swift deployment of heavy military equipment across the continent in the event of a war with Russia, The Moscow Times reported on October 30, citing European Commission documents.

According to the report, the plan will streamline procedures for cross-border military movements and designate key logistics corridors for the rapid transport of tanks, armored vehicles, and other heavy assets.

The initiative is part of the bloc’s broader effort to strengthen defense coordination among member states and improve military readiness.

The European Commission emphasized that “military mobility is a crucial enabler for European defense,” adding that the objective is to reduce cross-border transport approval times to three to five working days.

Coordination with NATO remains central to the project, ensuring compatibility with existing transatlantic logistics frameworks.

European Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean noted that the proposal includes infrastructure investments to upgrade bridges, roads, and railways to withstand heavy loads.

“We are working to ensure that our transport networks can support both civilian and defense needs,” she said.

The plan, which is expected to be formally presented in early 2026, also foresees closer cooperation between EU member states and private transport operators to guarantee the efficient movement of troops and equipment in times of crisis.

Earlier, it was reported that European governments plan to request billions in EU-backed loans under the SAFE scheme to jointly procure weapons and strengthen their own militaries.

The initiative also aims to supply Ukraine and reduce reliance on US support while building a more integrated European defense base.
