An explosion at the “Elastic” gunpowder military factory in Russia’s Ryazan region has resulted in the deaths of at least four Russian soldiers, with some reports indicating as many as five fatalities. The explosion occurred in one of the factory’s production areas, followed by a fire, according to Russian media reports on August 15.

According to multiple Russian sources, including Telegram channels and the regional emergency services, the incident took place around 10:30 a.m. local time.

The “Elastic” factory specializes in the production of synthetic fibers and ammunition. Initial reports from the local operational group indicated that there was an “explosion and fire” in one of the factory’s workshops, leading to casualties. The number of Russian military fatalities has since been confirmed to be four, with around 20 others injured.

The Russian news agency RIA Novosti later confirmed the information, and Telegram channel Baza reported that 10 of the injured are in critical condition.

More than 100 employees were evacuated from the facility following the blast. Emergency teams from the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) in the Ryazan region are on-site, with over 70 specialists and 28 units of equipment deployed to the area.

According to MChS reports, five fatalities have been confirmed, and a crisis management team has been set up to oversee the response.

The Russian Investigative Committee has launched a probe into the cause of the explosion at the “Elastic” factory in the village of Lesovoi, Shilovsky district.

Background: The “Elastic” synthetic fiber plant, established in 2000, specializes in the production of ammunition and weaponry. The factory was the site of a deadly explosion in October 2021 when 17 people were killed in a blast at a private explosives company, “Rozryad,” which operates within the facility, according to Ukrainian Pravda.

The “Rozryad” company produces industrial explosives, including materials derived from the disposal of ammunition, and rents space from “Elastic.”

Previously, it was reported that long-range drones struck deep inside Russia, targeting the Arzamas Instrument-Building Plant—a major producer of aviation and space components, including parts for cruise missiles—according to Exilenova+.

The attack hit the facility in the Nizhny Novgorod region at around 3:55 a.m. local time. The blast damaged the building’s roof, shattered windows, and likely destroyed equipment inside the strike zone.
