Fencing Federation Clears Russians and Belarusians to Join Team Events as Neutral Athletes

The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has approved the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in team competitions under a neutral status, beginning with the 2025 European Championships.
According to a statement released by the FIE on May 7, athletes granted the status of “individual neutral athletes” by the FIE Executive Committee will be eligible to form “neutral teams” for adult team events. These teams will compete under the flag of the FIE and not represent any national symbols.

The decision will take effect at the upcoming European Fencing Championships, scheduled to take place in Genoa, Italy, from June 14 to 19, 2025.
Previously, Russian and Belarusian fencers were permitted to take part in individual international competitions under neutral status, while junior teams were allowed limited participation. This latest decision extends the scope of participation to senior-level team events.
Earlier, on April 9, IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell confirmed that discussions were underway with winter sports federations about allowing Russian athletes to compete as neutrals in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. He cited the example of the 2024 Paris Games, where Russian athletes participated without national symbols.
