Finland Sends New Defense Package to Ukraine, Bringing Total Military Aid to $3.6 Billion

Finland will send its 31st defense aid package to Ukraine, with the decision approved by the country’s president on the government’s proposal, the Finnish Ministry of Defense wrote in a press release on January 16.
The package is valued at about $113 million, bringing the total value of Finnish military assistance to Ukraine to roughly $3.6 billion since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

“This time, we have built a package on an accelerated schedule that will help meet the most critical needs of the moment,” Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said.
“Finland will continue to support Ukraine with defense material, because it is the most effective way to promote the establishment of a just peace,” he added.

According to the ministry, the aid package has been prepared with both Ukraine’s battlefield needs and the resource situation of the Finnish Defense Forces in mind. For operational and security reasons, details on the exact contents, delivery method, or timetable will not be made public.
The ministry also noted that Finland’s procurement program aimed at supporting Ukraine through its domestic defense industry is continuing as planned this year, reinforcing Helsinki’s long-term commitment to Ukraine’s defense.
Previously, it was reported that the Finnish Defense Forces have begun training conscripts to spend nights in dugout shelters instead of heated tents during field exercises in order to reduce their exposure to enemy drones, drawing on lessons from the war in Ukraine.
Conscripts are now taught to conceal themselves without tents, sleeping in dugouts that provide better protection from aerial surveillance and thermal imaging than canvas shelters.
