Finland Deploys Hundreds of Drone Jammers to Shield NATO’s Eastern Flank

Finland has purchased hundreds of new drone jammers and detection systems to shield critical infrastructure and frontline units as NATO’s eastern flank strengthens air defenses in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine and recent drone incidents over Europe, according to Reuters on December 9.
Finland’s Defense Forces have acquired hundreds of SkyWiper Omni Max jammers produced by Lithuania-based NT Service, Colonel Mano-Mikael Nokelainen, the country’s Air Defense Inspector, said during a demonstration at a military base in Niinisalo in southwestern Finland.

The systems create a protective dome spanning several hundred meters that blocks control, video, and navigation signals and will be deployed around key sites such as military bases and other critical infrastructure.
“It is very important for the troops’ self-protection. In other words, it makes it possible to prevent drones from flying over the troops,” Nokelainen said, noting that Finland, which shares a long land border with Russia, joined the NATO military alliance in 2023.
In addition to the jammers, the Finnish military has purchased handheld Airfence drone detectors from the Finnish company Sensofusion and Smash add-on rifle sights from the Israel-based Smartshooter, equipment designed to help soldiers detect unmanned aircraft and more accurately target and shoot them down.

Nokelainen said the new systems are focused on countering small reconnaissance drones and declined to provide details on capabilities against larger unmanned aircraft.
NATO’s push to tighten air defenses intensified after about 20 suspected Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace in September and were subsequently shot down, while unidentified drone flights have disrupted European airspace in recent months.
Earlier, it was reported that NATO allied countries remain significantly underprepared to face mass drone strikes such as those carried out by Russian Armed Forces with “Shahed” drones, highlighting major air‑defense gaps across Europe.
