Russia could attack a NATO member state within the next two to four years, with the Baltic states among the most likely targets, European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius warned at a conference in Vilnius, according to European Pravda on November 17.
Kubilius, speaking on November 17, said the Russian leader Vladimir Putin could give an order to strike a NATO country by 2030 and that the Baltic states may be particularly exposed.
“The most important issues for the European Union and for NATO are how to defend the Baltics and what to learn from Ukraine. The urgency of the first issue comes from public statements by our intelligence services, including those in Germany, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, and our own Baltic region, that Putin may be ready to test Article 5 in the next two or four years, by 2030,” Kubilius said.

He added that in such a scenario, “the Baltic states may become one of the most likely targets of new Kremlin aggression.”
Kubilius emphasized that any Russian move against the Baltics would constitute an attack on the entire alliance and the European Union.
He also pointed to Article 42(7) of the Treaty on European Union, which provides for mutual assistance in the event of armed aggression against an EU member state and which, he noted, some experts describe as even stronger than NATO’s Article 5 in terms of the obligations states assume to help one another.
Earlier, it was reported that Andrius Kubilius, nominated as European Commissioner for Defense, stressed that Ukraine’s combat-tested defense industry must be integrated into the EU defense sector via the European Defense Industrial Program and direct investments in Ukrainian production.
