Fitburg Ship Released by Finland After Cable Damage Probe, Crew Member Still Detained

Finnish authorities have lifted the seizure of the Fitburg vessel, which had been detained on suspicion of damaging a submarine communications cable, and are escorting it out of the country, according to Yle report on January 12.
The ship departed the port of Kantvik in Kirkkonummi at around 11 a.m. after Finnish and Estonian police completed preliminary investigations on board, the Finnish Border Guard said.

“The Helsinki District Court arrested a crew member of the Fitburg vessel on Sunday in a retrial. Some of the ship’s crew will still be banned from travelling,” said Risto Lohi, Director General of Investigations, in a statement.
The exit operation is being led by the Helsinki Police Department, while the Border Guard is monitoring the vessel’s departure from Finland’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zone, Yle wrote.

The Fitburg is suspected of causing damage on New Year’s Eve to a submarine cable operated by Finnish telecom operator Elisa.
The break occurred in Estonia’s exclusive economic zone. Finnish police are investigating the case as suspected aggravated damage, attempted aggravated damage, and aggravated interference with telecommunications.
Previously, it was reported that Finnish authorities have detained the cargo vessel Fritzburg after it was observed in the country’s exclusive economic zone under suspicious circumstances. The ship was being investigated for potential involvement in the damage of an undersea telecommunications cable in the Gulf of Finland.
