For First Time Since WWII, Light Aircraft Drop Bombs On Russia’s Leningrad Region

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), in coordination with the Unmanned Systems Forces, Special Operations Forces, Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR), and border units, carried out a strike targeting Russia’s Leningrad region using light aircraft equipped with FAB-250 aerial bombs, according to the Telegram channel Mykolaivskyi Vanek on March 25.

The operation took place overnight on March 24 and involved remotely piloted light aircraft, reportedly A-22-type platforms, modified to carry and release Soviet-designed FAB-250 bombs. The outlet stated that this marks the first recorded use of such munitions against the Leningrad region since World War II.

The report indicates that the aircraft were operated at a distance and adapted to function as strike platforms, delivering unguided aerial bombs typically used by tactical aviation. FAB-250 bombs are general-purpose high-explosive munitions weighing approximately 250 kilograms, widely used by Russian forces in frontline operations.
The Leningrad region, located in northwestern Russia near the border with Finland and Estonia, has not previously been a regular target of air-delivered munitions during the current phase of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. According to Mykolaivskyi Vanek, the last time the region experienced aerial bombardment was during World War II.

The last documented large-scale aerial bombardment of Leningrad dates back to World War II, during the Siege of Leningrad between 1941 and 1944, when the city was subjected to sustained air raids as part of a prolonged blockade.
Earlier, according to the Russian outlet Astra on March 24, a Ukrainian long-range drone strike damaged key infrastructure at Russia’s Saratov oil refinery, including a refining unit and a 10,000-ton diesel storage tank, triggering a fire and forcing the facility to suspend operations.
