France will provide Ukraine with an additional radar for the SAMP/T air defense system, French Minister for the Armed Forces and Veterans Catherine Vautrin said during a briefing in Kyiv, according to Ukrinform on February 8.

She noted that France is currently working intensively to repair equipment already in service with Ukrainian forces.

“We are working on this issue, including the repair of the radar for the SAMP/T, and we plan to provide a replacement radar while the original is undergoing repairs,” Vautrin said.

In parallel with maintenance efforts, the French government continues regular coordination with MBDA, the company responsible for producing the system’s interceptor missiles.

Between 2024 and 2025, MBDA doubled missile production, a development considered critical for maintaining a steady flow of air defense supplies to Ukraine.

The radar is a critical component of the SAMP/T air defense system, responsible for detecting, tracking, and guiding interceptor missiles toward incoming aerial threats such as cruise missiles, aircraft, and drones.

Without a fully operational radar, the system’s ability to identify targets and coordinate interceptions is severely limited, making rapid replacement essential to maintaining continuous protection of Ukrainian airspace.

Earlier, reports emerged that France planned to deploy its next-generation SAMP/T NG air defense system to Ukraine as soon as it enters service.

“We agreed that this [SAMP/T NG] system, once developed, will be first deployed in Ukraine and will operate in Ukraine,” French President Emmanuel Macron said.
