Macron: Ukraine Will Be First to Deploy Next-Gen SAMP/T Anti-Missile Shield

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Ukraine will be the first country to receive the newest generation of the SAMP/T air defense system, which is still under development, during a press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart in Paris on November 17.
The upgraded system will reportedly feature improved specifications beyond the current models.
“We have launched a bilateral cooperation framework for the next 10 years focused on the acquisition, development, and production of drones, drone interceptors, and guided bombs,” Macron said. “We are planning deliveries over the next two years, with a longer-term timeline stretching to the next decade.”
Macron added that, while the next-generation SAMP/T system is still in development, France has agreed to deploy the system in Ukraine first.

“Ukraine already knows the characteristics of this system, but now it will be receiving one with enhanced capabilities,” he stated.
As part of a broader defense agreement, Ukraine will also be able to acquire up to 100 fully armed fighter jets, including training programs for both pilots and ground crews.
President Zelenskyy emphasized the strategic importance of the new SAMP/T systems, particularly for countering ballistic missile threats.

“The new level of SAMP/T is designed to intercept the enemy’s ballistic missiles,” he said. “I can’t disclose the delivery timeline, but this product is extremely important to us.”
Earlier, France’s army chief’s recent remarks and a technical assessment indicated that the Franco-Italian SAMP/T system is currently outperforming the Patriot system against Russian Iskander ballistic missiles in Ukraine, due to changes in missile flight profiles.
