FrankenSAM Unleashed—Ukraine’s BUK-AIM-7 Systems Down 105 Russian Targets

Ukraine’s hybrid FrankenSAM air defense systems—combining Soviet-era BUK launchers with US-supplied RIM-7 or AIM-7 missiles—have already destroyed 105 Russian aerial targets, according to the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment, which released footage of combat operations on April 19.
Three crews operating these modified systems are currently deployed across some of the most dangerous sectors, providing air defense coverage against ongoing Russian attacks.

According to a deputy crew commander identified as Oleh, engaging targets has become increasingly challenging.
“The lower the target flies, the harder it is for us to work. The enemy constantly maneuvers, changes altitude, and uses technical means to create interference,” he said.
Despite these difficulties, Ukrainian air defense units continue to achieve consistent results.
Oleh credited the success to accumulated experience, continuous training, and strong coordination within the crews.
The unit operates around the clock, maintaining a constant presence in the air defense network.
“The morale is high. We are ready to continue carrying out our tasks,” he added.

The US-made RIM-7 SeaSparrow is capable of engaging aerial targets at distances of up to 20 kilometers and at altitudes of up to 15 kilometers, making it suitable for medium-range air defense tasks.
The FrankenSAM concept reflects Ukraine’s broader approach to adapting existing systems with Western technology, creating effective and scalable solutions to counter evolving aerial threats.
Previously, a Ukrainian drone pilot, who recently set a world record by downing 2 Russian Shahed drones from 500km, stated in an interview that Ukrainian interceptor drones achieve about a 95% success rate. At most, his unit loses one drone out of ten.
