German Chancellor Merz Reaffirms Strong Support for Ukraine in Bundestag Speech

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and resisting Russian aggression, setting out three key principles in a 45-minute speech to the Bundestag on May 14, focused largely on foreign policy.
First, Merz stated that Germany would reassert its leadership role in Europe, work to rebuild trust with its partners, and provide unequivocal support to Ukraine.
“We are not a party to the war, and we do not intend to become one. But we are also not disinterested third parties or neutral mediators between the fronts. There must be no doubt where we stand: unambiguously on the side of Ukrainians,” the chancellor said.
Second, Merz called for a unified response from the free world to confront Russia and assist Ukraine. He warned that Russia’s ambitions extend beyond territorial gains in Ukraine, citing Moscow’s alleged cyberattacks, espionage, sabotage, and disinformation efforts across Europe.

Third, the chancellor strongly rejected any “dictated peace” forced on Ukraine by Moscow against its will.
“We hope and we all are working hard on this clear position, not just being held everywhere in Europe but also by our American partners,” Merz said, adding that he thanked President Donald Trump for supporting an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in two recent phone calls.
“It is of paramount importance that the political West not let itself be divided, so I will continue to make every effort to produce the greatest possible unity between the European and American partners,” he added.
On May 13, Merz stated that the European Union is prepared to impose tougher sanctions on Russia if meaningful progress toward ending the war in Ukraine is not achieved this week.
