Germany Blasts Putin’s “Peace” Offer as a Sham, Vows Continued Ukraine Support

Germany will not divert its attention from Ukraine in the face of new global crises and views Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s recent calls for peace as nothing more than a cynical ploy, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said during a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha in Kyiv, according to Ukrainian media outlet Ukrinform on June 30.
“When Putin speaks of peace today, it is nothing but mockery and derision,” Wadephul said.
Glad to welcome my German colleague and friend @AussenMinDe Johann Wadephul.

“His so-called willingness to negotiate is nothing more than a facade. He wants to subjugate all of Ukraine and at the same time sow fear throughout Europe.”
The German foreign minister stressed that Russia has only intensified its attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks. “This brutality shows that it is an assault not only on Ukrainian democracy, but also on morality, resilience, and the will to resist,” he said.
“You are resisting with tremendous courage,” Wadephul said.

“Putin sees this and is counting on our attention to weaken, to shift to new crises. But the last few weeks have shown that in Germany, he will not succeed. We stand firmly on Ukraine’s side and will support you for as long as necessary.”
Wadephul emphasized that Berlin will continue ramping up military aid to Kyiv. He noted that Germany has earmarked an additional €1.9 billion in its 2025 budget for advanced air defense systems, equipment, and ammunition.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha underscored the scale of Russia’s ongoing aerial bombardment campaign. “Since the beginning of this year, there have only been two days when Russia has not attacked Ukraine from the air,” he said.

Sybiha said he and Wadephul reviewed detailed statistics showing the intensity of Russian airstrikes throughout 2025.
“The map was color-coded—red and yellow for days when strikes occurred, yellow being the most intense, involving combined attacks using drones and various types of missiles,” he explained.
“There were only two green squares. That means that over this entire period, Ukraine has been attacked by Russian missiles and drones almost every single day.”
Earlier, Wadephul announced a joint initiative with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, calling on EU partners to evaluate their air defense inventories and consider transferring available systems to Ukraine.
