Germany Intensifies Negotiations to Secure Patriot Air Defense Deliveries for Ukraine

Berlin has confirmed it is in intensive discussions with Washington to acquire additional Patriot missile batteries for Ukraine, as Russian forces step up drone and missile attacks, as was reported by Bloomberg on July 4.
Germany’s chief government spokesman, Stefan Kornelius, told reporters that “intensive discussions are indeed being held on this matter,” adding that one option under consideration is purchasing Patriot batteries from US stocks for immediate transfer to Kyiv.
Germany has already sent three US-made Patriot systems from its military reserves to Ukraine. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius launched an initiative at the Rammstein coalition to secure more systems, and is due in Washington later this month to discuss production capacities and delivery schedules.

The urgency reflects an unprecedented scale of Russian aerial assaults: in one recent barrage, about 500 drones and missiles were launched in a single night, exposing critical gaps in Kyiv’s air defenses despite high interception rates.
Germany, Ukraine’s second-largest military donor after the United States, has provided approximately $44.8 billion in aid—including the Patriot systems—but insists further deliveries are vital to sustaining Ukraine’s defensive posture.
Earlier, Russia unleashed its most extensive drone and missile assault on July 4, launching 550 aerial weapons in a single night—478 of which were intercepted by Ukrainian defenses—yet the barrage exposed critical gaps in coverage.
