Germany Open to Deploying Troops in Ukraine for Peacekeeping, Says FM Baerbock
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that German military forces could be deployed to support peace in Ukraine if a ceasefire is reached with Russia, according to Berliner-Zeitung on December 4.
Baerbock’s remarks were made during a NATO meeting in Brussels, where she emphasized Germany’s willingness to back any initiative promoting lasting peace, including security guarantees, international peacekeeping missions, or increased military aid to Ukraine.
“German soldiers could be deployed only under the condition of a real ceasefire,” Baerbock said.
Baerbock’s proposal aligns with recent discussions led by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, who suggested that European nations might contribute troops to a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.
Kallas emphasized the importance of European countries being ready to discuss the deployment of their contingents to ensure stability.
NATO Foreign Ministers are convening in Brussels on December 3-4, 2024, to discuss support for Ukraine and regional security. The NATO-Ukraine Council will hold its meeting on December 3 as part of the agenda.
Earlier, Le Monde reported that some Western countries are once again discussing the possibility of sending their troops or private military contractors to Ukraine.
