Estonia Considers Deployment of Military Personnel to Ukraine
The Estonian government is currently discussing the possibility of sending military personnel to Ukraine for non-combat missions, according to Minister of Defense Hanno Pevkur. However, no specific decision has been reached at this time.
According to Polskie Radio, Pevkur emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of any deployed instructors. He remarked, “If we had a large contingent, say a brigade-sized unit with equipment, it would become a significant target for the Russians.”
Pevkur highlighted that any decision regarding the deployment of troops to Ukraine would require consensus among NATO member states. He noted, “All details need to be considered: force protection measures and logistics. Therefore, we continue our training in Poland and the United Kingdom. We will see how this situation develops.”
In conclusion, Pevkur affirmed that allies are making every effort to support Ukraine in its war efforts.
This discussion follows recent comments by former British Defense Minister Ben Wallace, who advocated for sending troops to assist in training and supporting the Ukrainian military. The topic of NATO troop presence in Ukraine has also been raised by French President Emmanuel Macron, who suggested that Western countries consider sending troops to Ukraine. Some nations, particularly in the Baltic region, have publicly expressed interest in this idea, although the majority, including former NATO Secretary-General, have rejected the possibility.
