Germany Will Not Turn a Blind Eye to Anti-Corruption Issues, Says Ukrainian Ambassador

Germany will not ignore concerns over anti-corruption and rule of law in Ukraine’s path to EU membership, according to Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev.

Speaking in an interview with European Pravda, Makeiev emphasized that these issues are fundamental principles of the European Union and will not be compromised.

Commenting on Law No. 12414, passed last week, which links the work of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) to the Prosecutor General, Makeiev stated:

“Anti-corruption and the rule of law are part of the core values of the European Union, and these issues are not up for debate.”

He underlined that Germany, as a key supporter of Ukraine’s EU accession, will remain attentive to reforms in this area.

“When you take on a leadership role in supporting Ukraine on this path – and Germany is doing exactly that – it is unlikely that anyone will turn a blind eye to core issues,” the ambassador said.

Makeiev also expressed optimism about a new development agreed upon by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during their recent meeting in Berlin.

“This is the renewal of Ukrainian-German intergovernmental consultations. Germany uses this format with selected countries – with France, Poland, and Japan. We will work to ensure that European integration is at the center of all bilateral interactions,” he said.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy unveiled a new draft law aimed at safeguarding the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies, following public protests over Bill No. 12414, which critics said could undermine NABU and SAPO by placing them under the Prosecutor General’s control.
