Germany’s New “Sparta” Mothership Drone to Begin Serial Production in Ukraine

German drone manufacturer Quantum Systems has announced it is developing a new base drone named “Sparta,” with production taking place in Ukraine. According to the company, the system is expected to enter serial production by the end of the year.
A spokesperson told Hartpunkt on August 11 that the current version is still a prototype, meaning certain features—such as the landing system—may be modified in the final production model.
Base drones are unmanned aerial systems capable of transporting and deploying other drones mid-air. This design can significantly extend the range of the carried systems, speed up response times to ground or aerial threats, and allow drones to remain in the operational zone for longer by being “pre-deployed” by the mothership.
According to Hartpunkt, Quantum Systems says Sparta is built to carry modular payloads, including other drones or a variety of sensor systems, making it adaptable for multiple roles. In addition to serving as a base drone, it can operate as a reconnaissance platform with a long loiter time for its weight class.

Sparta’s design, featuring a long, narrow fuselage and extended wings, is reminiscent of a classic glider. It is equipped with an upward-angled V-tail and an electric pusher propeller mounted at the rear. The configuration is intended to maximize lift for heavy payloads and ensure the longest possible flight duration.
Unlike other Quantum Systems models such as Vector, Twister, and Reliant, Sparta does not feature vertical take-off and landing capabilities Hartpunkt reported. Instead, it is launched via a catapult. The drone is also capable of performing a “deep stall” maneuver, flying very slowly and close to the ground.
According to the manufacturer, Sparta has a flight endurance of six to eight hours and an operational radius of 200 kilometers. Its maximum take-off weight is 23 kilograms, with about eight kilograms available for payload. The drone’s wings are fitted with mounting points for payloads on both sides.
Earlier, Quantum Systems supplied Ukraine with a Vector AI unmanned aerial vehicle featuring artificial intelligence and an acoustic detection system for locating enemy artillery fire.
