Europe and Asia must strengthen cooperation in response to growing threats from China and Russia to defend the rules-based international order, European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas said at the Shangri-La Dialogue defense summit in Singapore, Bloomberg reported on May 31.

“It is the greatest challenge of our time,” Kallas stated. “When China and Russia speak of leading together changes not seen in a hundred years and of revisions of the global security order, we should all be extremely worried.”

She accused China of aiding Russia’s war effort, noting that 80% of dual-use goods used by Russia in its war against Ukraine come from the world’s second-largest economy.

Referencing US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s remarks on the threat China poses to the rest of Asia, Kallas added, “If you are worried about China, you should be worried about Russia.”

Western officials have long accused China of supplying Russia with critical technologies, including drones, and of engaging in cyberattacks, sabotage, and activities targeting infrastructure such as undersea cables, Bloomberg wrote.

Kallas called on European and Asian partners to coordinate efforts against the so-called shadow fleet  and to revisit maritime security laws.

The article also notes that North Korea’s direct support for Russia—through the supply of missiles, ammunition, and even troops—risks expanding the war across both hemispheres.

Previously, it was reported that China has sharply reduced shipments of Mavic drones and related components to Ukraine and Western nations, while expanding exports to Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a media briefing.
